What?
The Fairfield
County Chorale is a mixed-voice chorus of approximately 100 talented
amateur singers. Each year the group presents three concerts of choral
masterworks with professional orchestra and soloists. Our music director for
the past 31 years is Swiss-born conductor Johannes Somary.
Who can join?
When?
Thursday, September 6th from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm at St Paul's Episcopal Church
at 661 Old Post Road in Fairfield (next to Fairfield Town Hall)
Friday, September 7th from 7:00 pm to
10:00 pm in the Mary M room at the Norwalk City Hall/Concert Hall at
125 East Avenue in Norwalk
Saturday, September 8th from 2:00 pm to
5:00 pm in the Community Room at the Norwalk City Hall/Concert Hall
at 125 East Avenue in Norwalk
Sunday, September 9th from 2:00 pm to 5:00
pm at St John's Catholic Church at 279 Atlantic Street in Stamford.
What are the
requirements?
- Ability to sing in tune and "match" pitches
- Read or be able to follow written choral music
- Ability to blend with other singers in an ensemble
- Commitment to attending rehearsals, learning music, and participating in
an organization of people who love music and singing
How is it done?
Members of the Chorale will greet you, answer questions, and pass out
registration forms. Maestro Johannes Somary will ask you to sing match
some pitches and intervals from the piano and sight-read a simple, traditional
tune (such as a hymn or folk song); he will listen to your voice to determine
which choral part you will be most comfortable singing.
What if I can't get to the scheduled auditions?
Potential members who cannot arrange to be at the scheduled audition
sessions will be given the opportunity to "sit in" at a Monday rehearsal and
have their auditions when rehearsal is over. What happens when I'm accepted?
- The first rehearsal will be on Monday, September 10 in the Mary McCarthy Room at Norwalk City Hall/Concert
Hall.
- The rehearsal begins at 7:30 p.m. and runs until approximately
10:00 p.m.
- Chorale members will greet you and get you seated in your section.
- Besides joining in the rehearsal, you will be asked to pay an annual
membership fee, currently $100, purchase from the Chorale (or otherwise
provide) your own music, and help sell tickets to the three
regularly-scheduled Chorale concerts.
What else does the Fairfield County Chorale
do?
Activities include:
- Joint performances with other choral groups
- International concert tours and engagements at music festivals
- Special events such as our Annual Tag Sale, Holiday caroling, and
Summer Sing-Alongs
- All-around good fun!
